SPECULA SPEAK
the art of daniella courban
opening reception march 11th, 3-6pm

In the current political climate wherein the future of Women's Reproductive Rights is truly uncertain I have decided to at once call our collective attention to issues of female reproductive, psychologic and social health, as well as pay tribute to an instrument which some members of society may not recognize and others like myself are very familiar with--the vaginal speculum. As an obstetrician-gynecologist, for me this is a celebration of the quotidien. In our fast paced, financially driven, computer run, genome savvy world, it is fascinating to me the extent to which medical professionals are still reliant upon a few ancient very successful inventions. How wondrous that we have at our ready disposal the means to look within the vagina. This is of course a privilege. This is why my specula---drawn and painted from various angles, at times dangling from strings, ask permission; this is why they speak.
100% of the artist's proceeds from this show will be donated to Transition House, a not-for-profit Cambridge based organization which provides services and housing for women and children victims of domestic violence.

PETE ROBBINS curates and promotes a jazz series at the Cornelia Street Café
on behalf of the organization “Music for America.” The group is a partisan
non-profit, promoting political and social awareness through live music.
Groups led by such jazz legends as Dave Douglas, Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane,
Bill McHenry, Rodney Green, John O’Gallagher, and others share the bill with
Robbins’ own group at each concert. In September 2004, the Village Voice
recognized Robbins’ musical, promotional, and political efforts by naming
him their featured jazz pick for the fall season.
Pete Robbins moved to New York in September, 2002, and immediately became “a
welcome presence on the creative music scene.” He leads his group at such
venues as the 55 Bar, Cornelia Street Café, Detour, and others.
“Centric”, Robbins’ debut album, was released by telepathy records (Boston)
in 2002. It features tenor saxophone extraordinaire George Garzone, as well
as guitarist Mike Gamble, bassist Chris Van Voorst Van Beest, and drummer
Pete Zimmer – all of whom are players on the New York jazz scene presently.
Robbins also dabbles in more avant-garde projects with such musicians as
Mark Dresser, Randy Peterson, Daniel Levin, and Mary Halvorson. After
stints in Boston and Copenhagen, Robbins now resides in Brooklyn.

“this guy rules. … a polished gun who shoots blanks could learn much about
depth of tone, use of registers, and the element of surprise from this
youngster.”
(DAN KING, the village voice)
“the vision and individuality of pete robbins…continues to show that jazz is
alive and well in the new millennium.”
(MARK F. TURNER, allaboutjazz.com)

(NATE CHINEN, the new york times)
“[pete’s] original compositions reflect a highly creative mind at work. …
pete robbins is a powerhouse of a talent.”
(LEE PROSSER – jazzreview.com)
"there’s a buoyancy to the music; its right-minded reliance on group
interplay generates solos that perpetually feed back into ensemble action. …
as a horn player robbins has liquid timbre that can remind just how pretty
modern jazz can be. "
(JIM MACNIE - the village voice)
“pete can become a force. a real force. he’s confident enough not to do
what others might tell him.”
(PAUL BLEY)
“robbins displays a keen imagination and a rousing command of his horn. He
also surrounds himself with serious talent. …a welcome presence on the
creative music scene.”
