Stu Sherman: Kosovo Punk

February 6th to February 20th

Opening reception February 11th from 3-6pm

sherman.jpg

Stu Sherman and several friends traveled to Kosovo from December 2004 to January 2005 on a mission both simple and complex, to figure out the musical landscape of the war-torn region. Due to the instability of the last fifteen years it is difficult to describe the state of Kosovo, which is currently under the governance and protection of the UN. While Sherman was researching, he found that the physical and psychological landscape of the region was horrifically altered from riots. During his brief stay there were constant rumors that the prime minister was going to be arrested and people would begin riots and murders anew. The people that Sherman talked to, who ranged from all over the spectrum of Kosovo society, gave him a fascinating glimpse into Kosovo music, culture, trends, and how you can create innovative art out of the rubble of your life.
What resulted was only the first part of an ongoing study. This show uses the landscape of Kosovo to illustrate the punk culture – a culture based on deconstructing norms and paternalistic repression. There are no photographs of concerts, kids with spiky hair, nihilistic teenagers, or the usual images conjured by something labeled “punk”. Sherman presents the spaces inhabited by the creative individuals trying to build a new world out of the fragments of the old. The works are a personal dialogue with contemporary trends in art and their meaning both aesthetically and morally when confronted with actual destruction and tragedy.

Stu Sherman is a professional iconoclast. After attending Wesleyan University as an undergraduate he moved to Boston to attend graduate school. His graduate education in law and public health was funded by an appearance on the television show Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He is self-taught as a photographer. His work will soon be exhibited on the American Apparel web page as part of the launch of an amateur photographers online gallery. Iris Alonzo, content advisor for American Apparel, described him as a “Ghetto Gursky”. He likes this description and hopes it sticks. This is his first solo show.

-QUARTET OF HAPPINESS

UBUNTU is a jazz/new-music collective with an emphasis on sharing and collaboration. The band includes: Evan Mazunik on piano, prepared piano, accordion and other keyboards; Alex Foote on guitars and digital effects; Rick Stone on alto, tenor saxophone and clarinet; J. Frederick on drums, laptop and electronics; and Jay Foote on acoustic and electric basses and sampler. In addition to being virtuosic improvisers, all five members of UBUNTU are distinct and accomplished composers. The aim of the ensemble is to play original music with soul and create an awareness of the moment through a blend of imaginative songwriting and spontaneous improvisations.
UBUNTU has performed in Boston, New York City, and Northern New Jersey for fans of improvised music. The ensemble strives to play original music that is pleasing to the ear, yet challenges even the most educated listeners.

The Quartet of Happiness

The Quartet of Happiness was formed in the spring of 2003 by saxophonists Rick Stone and Kelly Roberge. Along with Stone and Roberge the group includes bassist Kendall Eddy and drummer Austin McMahon. The main focus of this ensemble is to perform original compositions written in a performance art/theatrical style. The members of the quartet draw from a wide range of musical backgrounds and styles, including jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, folk, and classical music. Another objective of the group is to set up a series of concerts/clinics at public schools and colleges to teach role-playing, movement, and improvisation through music.

Phil, known for his “luminous free-flowing constructs”, has a unique trumpet style which merges classic jazz influences with avant-garde musings. His openness and great ears make for a perfect 3play match. Some of his credits include performances and recordings with Chris Potter, Freddie Hubbard, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Dave is a burning young drummer, with great energy and ears to match! A perfect 3play foil.

Phil and Dave will be joined by 3play regulars Josh Rosen, piano, and Lello Molinari, bass, for an evening of free improvisation, original compositions, deconstructed standards and the occasional cover tune.

THE INSECT PYRAMID TRANSMISSION TOUR!
featuring

-MASTER MUSICIANS OF HOP FROG (int'l)

frog.jpg

HOP FROG

The hop-frog kollectiv itself is a mix of over twenty participants who focus on experimental spoken word, art & music. The core members of the kollectiv have performed with Not Breathing, DJ Cheb I Sabbah, David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, etc.), Steve Mackay and The Radon Ensemble (The Stooges, Violent Femmes) & Dame Darcy (Meatcake) under the names hop-frog's drum jester devotional and The Master Musician's of hop-frog.

Hop-frog have not only toured with Backworld (feat. Joe Budenholzer of Current 93, Foetus, etc.) and Sorrow (featuring Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade, Spell, Current 93, Death In June and Coil) on two separate occasions but members of hop-frog have played in both of these projects for the duration of the tours.

The live performances are especially intriguing featuring heavily effected traditional western instruments such as clarinet, violin, guitar, drums, analog and bass fused with eastern, tribal, toy and non-traditional instruments such as the saz, toy & real accordions, circuit bent keyboards, snake charmer flutes, christmas tree bells, the Dhol, broken cymbals and even a kitchen sink.

hop-frog have performed on six occasions in Paris, France, all over the western U.S., and just completed an intensive European tour in May, 2005.

TZII
French composer, Tzii is a musician but also a video maker and a DJ. As a logical sequel to his musical activities of the nineties (public performances began in 1994), he created his own label (Night On Earth Rec.), releasing vynil records, videos, mixtapes and soon CD-Rs and DVDs. Polymorphis in tastes and centers of interest, he is influenced by various popular cultures, mainly european and african. He explores all the forms of the industrial culture, playful or introspective, electronic or acoustic, visual or sonic. His livesets, whatever form it takes, are always an "inside mind" trip.

ripit.jpg

RIPIT
Nyko Esterle's electronic experiments, as an attempt to a musical self-suffisency, start in 1998 with the founding of his label RIPOSTE.REC and his solo project RIPIT. He was mixing electronic sounds patterned in a rhythmic and repetitive form with a stage attitude closer to punk than to the DJ one, confronting a rock audience to a hard and crude music, where the human is only there to alternate the structure and by then, giving an animal spontaneity to analog and mechanical sounds.

Since then, he knews how to explore the worldwide underground electronic scene by touring Europe and north America, by releasing several recordings on various formats and by developing a local scene thru massive experimental party organizing over Paris.

All along his travels and tours, his meeting with other artists leaded him to collaborate with a lot of different projects as Black Elf Speaks (Noise Rock Opera project from the members of Usaisamonster), Sikhara (Radonstudio.com), Steve Mackay (Sax player of The Stooges and The Violent Femmes), Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer). He toured alongside the previous but also with Doormouse, Venetian Snares, Hecate, Man Is The Bastard Noise and several others...
