The UNDERGROUND JAZZ STRING QUARTET

The UNDERGROUND JAZZ STRING QUARTET is a traditional string quartet that plays jazz arrangements and original compositions which include improvisation. The group was founded in 1991 by four string students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts, and performed throughout New England and on the West Coast. Two of the original members, violinists Paula Zeitlin and Tomoko Iwamoto, are joined by violist Lisa Kempski and cellist Stephanie Wingfield, in performing pieces which meld the string quartet sound with contemporary jazz string techniques and improvisation. The UGSQ members see themselves as part of a long and rich history of jazz string playing, from early blues through Joe Venuti to the Turtle Island String Quartet to Regina Carter.
