howard fishman, bandleader, guitarist and songwriter, began his career on the streets of new orleans and in the subways of new york before making his debut at the algonquin oak room in 1999. he has since headlined in major venues both in the states and abroad, including: the steppenwolf theater, the blue note, njpac, massmoca, the pasadena playhouse, the bottom line, le petit journal, and joe's pub. a connecticut native, he spent his musically formative years in new orleans. the all-music guide has called him "an important force in creative music," and the new york times has written that his work "transcends time and idiom." fishman has been a featured guest on npr's fresh air with terry gross, world cafe with david dye, on the leonard lopate show and soundcheck with john schaefer. he maintains a full-time touring schedule and has recorded five critically acclaimed cds for his own monkey farm label. his latest, "look at all this!” was produced by grammy-winner rob fraboni (bob dylan, keith richards, the band). fishman’s always eclectic sound and visceral, explosive live shows are becoming legendary. his band includes violinist mazz swift, bassist ian riggs and kevin louis on trumpet.

fishman's stop at the zeitgeist is part of his band's "small rooms tour," designed to avoid the trappings and distractions of larger venues and to bring performers and audience together for a visceral and intimate mutually shared experience.

Celebrating their new release on Fresh Sound Records, Traveller, the Arthur Kell Quartet has been enthusiastically embraced before sold-out audiences in Spain and New York. Traveller is an exquisite, compelling new recording from the much in-demand bassist/composer, and the follow up release to Kell’s tribute to the late Thomas Chapin, See You In Zanzibar (2000). The group forms an incredibly cohesive unit that breathes harmoniously, rides the ebb and flow of the music in unison, and interprets Kell’s melodic compositions with virtuosity, sensitivity and in abundance, profound beauty.

The Art of Palestine

December 6- January 1

Opening reception: Tuesday, December 6, 6-9 pm

Ibrahim.jpg

an exhibit featuring paintings, drawings, and prints by prominent Palestinian artists
with Palestinian artist Samia Halaby

Opening reception on Tuesday, December 6, 6-9 pm,
with Palestinian artist Samia Halaby

Not everything is jolly in December. The Zeitgeist Gallery has opted to display what it considers a more fitting tribute to the holy/holiday season by displaying work created by Palestinian artists, many of whom hail from Gaza. As one would expect, the themes of modern Palestinian art don't necessarily coincide with the bright and shiny side of a Boston-area December.

"The Art of Palestine" draws upon thousands of years of history and pre-history in Palestine -- of ancient culture and the larger ambience of Arab art and cultural tradition -- and of a revolutionary attitude, which gives credit to other great artistic movements of the past century. These artists of Palestine, often participating in passive resistance (and sometimes in active resistance), have created a body of work that seems to echo the Mexican muralists. One can sense the spirit of Diego Rivera, with a touch of Picasso, in this body of Palestinian work.

The exhibition is a unique contribution to the Boston's December art scene. As expected, much of the work expresses the artists experiences with war, death, exile, and occupation -- obviously major themes that consume modern Palestinian life. The Palestinian artists included in this exhibit are Samia Halaby, Tayseer Barakat, Abdal Rahman Al Mozayen, Abd-al Naser Amer, Mustafa Al Hallaj, Zahed Izzat Harash, Jawad Ibrahime, Adnaan Zbeidi, and Adnaan Yahya -- all capable of generating for the audience a fascination for all things Palestine. Perhaps that fascination will then lead to greater understanding and appreciation.

The concept behind the band's compositions is to fuse different genres of groove oriented music with improvisation.   The influences are as varied as funk, jazz, hip hop, dub and electronica.  The ultimate goal is to find balance; on one hand the music seeks to compel one to dance and enjoy the rhythmic grooves and melodicism.   However, the music also should challenge the listener in new and interesting ways

Fuze is best known as the leader of the Screaming Headless Torsos.

Fuze's recordings are an experimental mix of tradition with modern sounds and rhythms, a melange of funk-rock jazz, ambient textural improvisations, world-music elements, metal, reggae, house, dub, drum n bass, and other new grooves topped with Fuze's unique writing, extraordinary soundscapes and passionate soloing.

Fuze's KiF offers a fresh palette of other-worldly sounds: Chinese melodies, Arabic calls to prayer and Indian invocations with Fuze's signature brand of highly funky jams ranging from rocked-out madness to drumn'bass, GoGo to plaintive meditations and moving, emotional ballads.

The UNDERGROUND JAZZ STRING QUARTET

The UNDERGROUND JAZZ STRING QUARTET is a traditional string quartet that plays jazz arrangements and original compositions which include improvisation. The group was founded in 1991 by four string students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts, and performed throughout New England and on the West Coast. Two of the original members, violinists Paula Zeitlin and Tomoko Iwamoto, are joined by violist Lisa Kempski and cellist Stephanie Wingfield, in performing pieces which meld the string quartet sound with contemporary jazz string techniques and improvisation. The UGSQ members see themselves as part of a long and rich history of jazz string playing, from early blues through Joe Venuti to the Turtle Island String Quartet to Regina Carter.
