afternoon: troglodytes

4-6 pm
$7

Tyler Wood – Keyboards
Andrew Bergmann – Bass
Klaas van Donkersgoed– Drums

Troglodytes, who were born in Amsterdam and weaned on monthly gigs at the Zeitgeist Gallery, play ebullient, jazz-infused jams that elude comparison. Bergmann’s songwriting and Wood’s keyboard expressions are as personal and honest as any art-rock or garage punk, harmonically rich as any modern jazz, and as groovy as your favorite soul record. The songs, soon to be released on the three-years-in-production full-length album Ria (slated for release on Floating Opera Records in early 2006), will inhabit your brain for a long time.

The performance will feature the outstanding Dutch drummer Klaas van Donkersgoed, who last performed with the Trogs at Amsterdam’s famed Bimhuis in June 2004. Klaas was also the original drummer of the bombastic nonet Ghorar Deem Express- Andrew’s other composition vehicle (which features Tyler prominently on keys)- and is heard on the Deem’s self-titled debut album. (Find out about their recent tour and upcoming projects at www.ghorardeemexpress.com.)

The set will include a pastiche of Bergmann songs old and new, as well as the requisite decontextualized covers which could draw from artists like Madness, Madonna, Pavement, and the Beatles.
