be3: soul jazz, reggae, poetry

matt jenson - hammond organ
morris acevedo - guitar
dave cowan - drums

Be3 got its start in Boston when organist Matt Jenson met guitarist Morris Acevedo while they were both in school (Berklee and New England Conservatory respectively). Back then the sound was purely in the tradition of the mainstream organ trio greats but now things are quite different. With the addition of drummer Dave "The Young Professor" Cowan and years of collective development by all, the sound includes past vibes of the jazz organ trio tradition but immediately travels into a unique universe of neo-soul, roots reggae, dub and Latin styles. Matt now teaches an entire course on Bob Marley at Berklee College of Music and will be dropping in electronic synth textures and a bit of melodica over the grooves. Morris is founder of The New England Guitar Workshop (in Marblehead, MA) and continues to infuse his sensitive jazz outlook with agressive rock influenced licks. Dave also teaches at Berklee and brings pure funk and rock to the Be3 table. Special guest Alex Alvear (leader of the poplular Latin bands Mango Blue and Manguito) will join the group on Baby Bass for the second set. The group will be playing tunes from Earth Wind and Fire, Ernest Ranglin, Ahmad Jamal, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy Cliff, a few of Matt's originals and ?!?!?!?...all with an Irie Vibe!

boston-based experimental jazz and new music champions jon damian and john voigt will be joined by montreal-based composer and violinist malcolm goldstein for an evening of over-the-top compositions and performance art pieces. the zeitgeist gallery is not a big enough space to contain this kind of collaboration. the audience may need to stand outside!

malcolm goldstein, violinist /composer: his "soundings" improvisations have received international acclaim for "reinventing violin playing," extending the range of tonal/sound-texture possibilities of the instrument and revealing new dimensions of expressivity.

jon damian, guitar: his performances range from working with bill frisell to luciano pavarotti, the boston symphony orchestra under seiji ozawa to johnny cash, and he is the inventor of the rubbertellie.

john voigt, bass: "in his hands the bass turns into a real talker, a mythical creature, a mouthpiece for the history of man." (the improvisor).

"connecting points"
paintings by lisie s. orjuela

opening reception: saturday, november 5th, 3-6 pm

(cambridge, ma) zeitgeist gallery presents "connecting points" : paintings by lisie s. orjuela. october 24-november 7, with an opening reception on saturday, october 29, 3-6 pm. regular gallery hours: 1-7 pm, tues.-sun. free and open to the public. at the zeitgeist gallery, 1353 cambridge st., inman sq., cambridge. wheelchair accessible. for more information call the zeitgeist gallery, 617-876-6060 or log onto www.zeitgeist-gallery.org.

lisie s. orjuela visually taps into the inner world of the psyche, spirit, soul. her paintings are reminiscent of woven textiles, with layers of thoughts intertwined with feelings and experiences. her work is timely since it also explores rising up from difficult times. these experiences are often mournful, yet ever vibrant and on the move. her intent is to grasp connections and find the relationships that exist therein, whether within ourselves, others and/or our surroundings.

orjuela's "connecting points" series features richly colored, textured figurative images. each painting evokes a state of mind. orjuela's main interest lies in the interior dimensions, the psychological spheres and environments. hence the lack of recognizable placement for the human figures. instead they dissolve and then emerge out of the surrounding ground, interacting with it, being a part of it.

patterns and textures have become an important part of orjuela’s vocabulary in the last few years, adding to the richness and ambiguity of the pieces. the complexity of the figures' inner worlds are hinted at by using an organic process of layering visual textures with rich earthy colors. orjuela's process is slow and deliberate, as she mines for the interior dimensions that lie beneath each image. her "connecting points" paintings are not only weighty in content, they are also hefty in size. with most of the pieces having dimensions of approximately 4ft. by 4ft., orjuela's "connecting points" looms large visually and mentally.

originally from south america, painter lisie s. orjuela has lived in various countries and throughout the united states. she currently resides and has her studio in connecticut. orjuela is a founding member of the vibrant arts & literature laboratory gallery in new haven, ct. in addition to participating in numerous group exhibitions, orjuela has had solo exhibitions in ma, ct, nj, mo, il, ok, and mexico. orjuela’s solo exhibit at the zeitgeist gallery will be running concurrently with another "connecting points" solo exhibit at the edward williams gallery, fairleigh dickinson university, in hackensack nj. the exhibit in new jersey runs from october 3d-november 4th. for more information log onto www.lisieorjuela.com.

the ominous collective invites you to a very special kabarett 16-bit. this month the creepy creatives bring you an exciting tribute to the worldly and mysterious british doctor, m. william frederick omens (after whom the collective is named, of course). psychotic artisans optic rose and electropunks livesexact will be on hand to sing the praises of his contributions to the 'dark mechanical sciences.' pushcart prize nominated poet edward j. carvalho may have a word or two to say about omens' flavorful abuse of the english language. what time is it, mr fox could very well sing a sultry song about his knees, or present him with yet another award for his bravery in the face of tapioca. and it's possible the good doctor could make an appearance too--he's been known to stir up a little hell once in a while. but scotland yard hasn't been able to prove anything yet, so there's a good chance he'll be there. will you?

with performances by empathy and gee-rog of specimen 37, new remorse and the breadweather biologists, as well as philosophical musings by the late steve robot. presided over by our in-house diva of decadence, jutta.

also slated are performances by leah callahan's illegitimate theatre company and the imo'an performance troupe. crowd control by the deliciously dangerous jutta.

Quotes

“Everything is stated so to the point that it is like a speech after a team of writers have poured over the language…a treasure trove of a listening experience; indeed, there are moments that are so beautifully done it seems as if one is sifting through a basket of jewels,” Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide.

“If you've ever wondered where jazz will be going in the 21st century, perhaps the answer lies with New American Wing. Beautiful, and simple—The shape of jazz to come,” Mish-Mash Music Review, July 2005 Issue #73.

“Wonderful music—honest and direct. Excellent compositions,” Anthony Braxton, composer/saxophonist.

Bios

The New American Wing, founded by composer and guitarist Daniel Raimi, combines the unique instrumentation of trumpet, cello, and guitar into a stylistically diverse modern music. With Jacob Varmus (trumpet) and Erica Sattin (cello), the group performs original compositions and arrangements that range in style from Impressionistic to Americana, from freely improvised jazz to haunting country ballads.
The New American Wing has performed extensively around the New York area, and celebrated the release of their first album to lavish critical praise in the summer of 2005. The group continues to add new material, all the while updating and refining its older repertoire. Each performance is unique, and not to be missed.

"Negative Sex and Untold Secrets"
new work by Kristian Peters and Miss Lyn Cardinal

November 7-21
Opening reception, with live music provided by
Monique Ortiz (of Bourbon Princess),
Saturday, November 12, 3-6 pm

(Cambridge, MA) Zeitgeist Gallery presents "Negative Sex and Untold Secrets": new work by Kristian Peters and Miss Lyn Cardinal. November 7-21; an opening reception on Saturday, November 12, 3-6 pm, with live music provided by Monique Ortiz (of Bourbon Princess). Regular gallery hours: 1-7 pm, Tues.-Sun. Free and open to the public. At the Zeitgeist Gallery, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge. Wheelchair accessible. For more information call the Zeitgeist Gallery, 617-876-6060 or log onto www.zeitgeist-gallery.org.

cross and flower 72 dpi.jpg

Inner artistic monologues can take you many places. For Kristian Peters, these become explorations of sex and in photographic terms, negative sex. Her un-manipulated images are created by introducing two unrelated negatives, both with striking properties. She then scans the negatives, sandwiching them together to form / birth another separate, unique piece of art -- a negative offspring from its parental negatives. The result is for the viewer to determine and to feel the fuel behind the fire. Peters' "Negative Sex" is a very deliberate process of choosing the negatives -- but the results, after scanning, have a non-deliberate life of there own.

pastel painting A 72 dpi.jpg

Miss Lyn Cardinal finds it only natural to connect her "Untold Secrets" with Peters' "Negative Sex." Her work spans the creative bridge from large, non-traditional pastel paintings to evocative collage & assemblage pieces. Her pastels feature mysterious, organic shapes resting in their own private environments. The focus is on color, shadow and weight using full advantage of the rich pigments only pastels can provide.Yet Miss Lyn finds her story-telling voice through her collage & assemblage work. She is inspired not only by the beauty in a single found-object but by the magic created when it is combined with the grace of the written word. Her collages hint at stories and secrets begging to be told. Of her work Miss Lyn says: “I want to draw the viewer into a different world in which they become a part of the piece. By creating a sense of mystery, the viewer must interpret, and make sense of, the clues presented -- using either their own personal language or that of the collective subconscious."

Background:
Kristian Peters is a photographic artist, film maker, founder and director of Sonic shake ARThole. Her work began as darkly comic photographic images illustrating a love for the 1950's and American Trash Culture. She developed many characters in this forum, most notably Miss Kiki Vegas. Storyboards and production teams gave rise to elaborate photo shoots of her characters in action. The next natural progression was film. She currently is in post production of "The Kiki Vegas Story" and in development of her latest script "Desperate Hellcat." The new work shown at the Zeitgeist Gallery is a reaction to having rid herself of the characters and a retuning to a more introspective way of communicating with her pictures.

Miss Lyn Cardinal is Mass College of Art graduate. She has been working through her compulsion to represent her organic forms in various styles and media for years and is continually on the look out for more interesting found objects for her collages on her long walks through out the city of Boston. Miss Lyn is also the well-known editor of The Boston Groupie News, Boston’s first, and most legendary, punk/rock’n’roll fanzine. After resurrecting it online in 2001 as www.bostongroupienews.com, Miss Lyn has been the muse of many rockers and the inspiration behind some of Boston’s most notable and entertaining bands. She has appeared in several documentaries about the Boston music scene and as Nova in "The Kiki Vegas Story".

Tyler Wood – Keyboards
Andrew Bergmann – Bass
Klaas van Donkersgoed– Drums

Troglodytes, who were born in Amsterdam and weaned on monthly gigs at the Zeitgeist Gallery, play ebullient, jazz-infused jams that elude comparison. Bergmann’s songwriting and Wood’s keyboard expressions are as personal and honest as any art-rock or garage punk, harmonically rich as any modern jazz, and as groovy as your favorite soul record. The songs, soon to be released on the three-years-in-production full-length album Ria (slated for release on Floating Opera Records in early 2006), will inhabit your brain for a long time.

The performance will feature the outstanding Dutch drummer Klaas van Donkersgoed, who last performed with the Trogs at Amsterdam’s famed Bimhuis in June 2004. Klaas was also the original drummer of the bombastic nonet Ghorar Deem Express- Andrew’s other composition vehicle (which features Tyler prominently on keys)- and is heard on the Deem’s self-titled debut album. (Find out about their recent tour and upcoming projects at www.ghorardeemexpress.com.)

The set will include a pastiche of Bergmann songs old and new, as well as the requisite decontextualized covers which could draw from artists like Madness, Madonna, Pavement, and the Beatles.

Blake’s debut CD as a leader will be available at the concert, and features Boston musicians Alec Spiegelman, Jorge Roeder, Jorge Perez, Richie Barshay, and Alexei Tsiganov.

The Dan Blake Party is an adventurously swinging quartet that takes a firm root in the jazz tradition (Sidney Bechet, Thelonius Monk, Herbie Nichols to name a few), going all the way back to the grooves of old while staying true to the uniquely catchy melodies and honest improvisations Dan Blake has become known for. The songs capture a quality in jazz music that is both catchy and accessible, but also is uncompromisingly original in musical approach.

The Dan Blake Party will be joined by saxophonist Kelly Roberge’s “The Quartet of Happiness,” a group that blends adventurous compositions with a theatrical twist that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

ian maxwell mackinnon and eric zinman are proud to invite you, as a special, prescreened american, to president george w. bush and vice president dick cheney's executive focus group for a project with the highest stakes for the future of our country: a remake of the 1986 blockbuster 'top gun.' made in collaboration with the u.s. air force and hollywood powerhouse jerry bruckheimer, this film is a sign of the white house's faith, commitment, and leadership in advancing america's ideals at home and abroad. taking our hero on a secret mission to iraq, this movie will boost u.s. military recruitment, convince skeptics of our noble cause, and demonstrate to the muslim world what freedom and liberty are all about. the president and vice president have decided to run the focus group themselves after hearing reactions to the rough cut. mr. bush and mr. cheney will act out new and corrected scenes and play songs from the soundtrack, with mr. cheney accompanying the president on piano.

this production is the third in a trilogy presented by mackinnon and zinman. 'the show was hilarious' is what the boston herald said about 2003's 'a bush-cheney christmas.' the boston phoenix named last year's 'the apotheosis of george w. bush' a 'pick of the week.' and the boston globe, describing a preview appearance for that show, said 'mackinnon's performance transcended cartoonish parody to achieve a provocative, unsettling humor.'

the bush-cheney 'top gun' focus group

ian maxwell mackinnon and eric zinman are proud to invite you, as a special, prescreened american, to president george w. bush and vice president dick cheney's executive focus group for a project with the highest stakes for the future of our country: a remake of the 1986 blockbuster 'top gun.' made in collaboration with the u.s. air force and hollywood powerhouse jerry bruckheimer, this film is a sign of the white house's faith, commitment, and leadership in advancing america's ideals at home and abroad. taking our hero on a secret mission to iraq, this movie will boost u.s. military recruitment, convince skeptics of our noble cause, and demonstrate to the muslim world what freedom and liberty are all about. the president and vice president have decided to run the focus group themselves after hearing reactions to the rough cut. mr. bush and mr. cheney will act out new and corrected scenes and play songs from the soundtrack, with mr. cheney accompanying the president on piano.

this production is the third in a trilogy presented by mackinnon and zinman. 'the show was hilarious' is what the boston herald said about 2003's 'a bush-cheney christmas.' the boston phoenix named last year's 'the apotheosis of george w. bush' a 'pick of the week.' and the boston globe, describing a preview appearance for that show, said 'mackinnon's performance transcended cartoonish parody to achieve a provocative, unsettling humor.'

jennifer greer - vocals, piano
damian watson - bass

Jennifer Greer’s music is an eclectic mix of pop, jazz, and classical traditions, woven into an emotional and highly rhythmic musical journey. Inspired by personal experience, dreams, the natural world, books, film, and sometimes politics, Jennifer’s songs seek to find a mood and enfold the listener inside it. Her distinctive voice which can soar from earthy and sensual to sweetly lush is showcased in her new album “the Apiary,” which critics are calling “stunning.” A true instrumentalist, she explores a wide range of mood and sound, playing the piano with an imagination rarely found in pop or folk today. As a performer, she exudes a passion and joy that is tangible, shameless, and direct.

Now in Boston, Jennifer has teamed up with the reliable Damian Watson of Brother Mosley, and exciting Brazilian-born Berkley grad Rodrigo Bonelli on drums. Sharing a wonderful and close-knit energy on stage, their performances are potent, and sure to leave an impression.

cake on cake (sweden)
brute choir
eisenhower highway

Cake on cake is a bizarre charming orchestra comprised of one woman, Helena Sundin. Helena grew up in a small sixty person village Sweden and currently lives in Umeå, Sweden where she attends art-school. Born into a family of musicians, Helena became classically trained in a variety of instruments and has a passion for learning many strange instruments and integrating them into her music. As a result, even though Cake on Cake is a solo-project, it seems as though there is a small orchestra playing on her songs. Combining stunning harmonies with instruments such as the metallophone, xylophone, piano, organ, keyboard, guitar, mandolin, flutes, harmonicas, melodica, and various percussive and electronics instruments. Cake on Cake’s Debut album is available now through Desolation Records.

The Brute Choir, can perhaps be described as the perefct combination between shout-pop and the post folk tradition. The act which will be performing as a duo, have recieved comparissions to such artists as Will Oldham, and The Magnetic Fields. The Brute Choir's songs are filled with tales of love, death and leaving, and bring a great intensity and sadness to the table. The Brute Choir will be releasing their debut album on Desolation Records in 2006.

Locals, Eisenhower Highway will also be joining the bill.

The Pandas with a fondness for the music of Ennio Morricone, Astrud Gilberto, and Kraftwerk, generate space age instrumental music. At their base, layers of percolating keyboards and layed back drumming, augmented by rapid fire drum loops. The Pandas sound is characterized by lengthy guitar and bass compositions that move and breath in amoebic fashion. At times they engage in high powered sonic excursions and at times play delicately sentimental instrumental passages. Also utilizing glockenspiel, melodica, synths, glitchy low fi samples, and live original video projections, The Pandas are a must see for fans of Mum, Stereolab and Tortoise.

Luis Fraire - acoustic & electric drums
Brian Goodhue - keyboards & samplers

Banda Aceh, Indonesia: IN THE WAKE OF THE TSUNAMI, A WITNESS

a documentary film, presented by therese condit (20 min.)
followed by discussion and opinion.

A look at the current conditions in the area hit hardest by last year's tsunami.
For 20 years, Aceh, Indonesia had been isolated by the Indonesian government due to civil war, rebellion, and open conflict. But the 2004 tsunami changed everything. This documentary looks at their situation now, almost a year after the tsunami and all its devastation, as most citizens of Banda Aceh have yet to see the promised relief funds materialize. Cambridge resident Therese Condit travelled to Aceh this summer, and returns now to tell the story of the Acehnese people, their enduring struggle, and the beauty that remains.

"Altogether, the sound is definitely jazz but
distinctively Argentinean"

"Argentine composer Pablo Ablanedo makes a disarmingly
gentle but firm debut notable more for his ascetic,
introspective writing than his low-profile piano. This
band plays the through-composed and chamber-like
pieces understatedly rather than in-your-face, slowly
unfolding a mature, inclusive world vision."
(4 Stars) Fred Bouchard, DownBeat Magazine

"Essentially, Ablanedo possesses all of the goods
necessary to become a major force in modern jazz.
Recommended." Glen Astarita, All About Jazz

If you could grab electricity in the air, and turn it
into music - what would it sound like? Todd Merrell and Patrick Jordan create immersive,
otherworldly, musical soundscapes from electromagnetic
radiation in the atmosphere and earth, using single
sideband shortwave receivers and electronics. Merrell and Jordan pull sounds from the
sky, make intruments out of machines, and music out of
noise.

Merrell has performed and recorded extensively, both
solo and with Aidan Baker, Pilotram, Bunny Brains, and
with Patrick Jordan, as the Single Side Band. He has
performed at Knitting Factory, Galapagos Art Space,
Free 103.9's Tune(Out)))Side, ABCNoRio, The Tank,
Share, Brownie's, The Cooler, and East Village Radio
(New York); HotHouse, Club Lower Links, Cafe Voltaire,
WBEZ, and WFMT (Chicago); The Berklee Performance
Center (Boston); and Real Art Ways, The Webster
Underground, The Municipal, Lincoln Theater, UConn's
von der Mehden Hall, WRTC, and WWUH (Connecticut). He
has produced recordings for the Silver Apples' record
label Whirlybird, as well as his own material, and his
original work has been premiered by artists such as
Chicago A Capella and Double-Bassist Robert Black of
the Bang On A Can Allstars. His piece "Jnny: A Love
Song" has been performed over sixty times worldwide by
Michael Barrett's New York Festival Of Song. His
latest work will be released in early 2006 on
Dreamland Recordings in Australia, and Transient
Frequency in New York. The Hartford Advocate calls his
work "Brilliant".

Patrick Jordan has worked in a variety of media, and
collaborated with Todd Merrell, Aidan Baker, Jake
Bell, and Dan Gardopee, among others. His frequent
collaborations with Todd Merrell have garnered
critical praise from The New Art Examiner, P-Form
Performance Art Magazine, and The Hartford Advocate.
