he Ominous Collective present "Kabarett 16-Bit: Au Revoir, Robotzen".

What's curiouser than curious? Robotzen returning for one final farewell show! They're a band that's traveled from Boston to Eastern Europe, around to the Midwest USA and back again, and they're putting the project to rest at the Zeitgeist Gallery. Who knows what could happen? Like the original unknown pioneers of the Jazz scene who never attained commercial success, the contribution this group has made to the genre of electro-rock is unmeasurable. Some might even say virtually non-existant. See the band that a-very-famous-magazine called "so underground, they're dancing on the asthenosphere." Take this chance and grab it with both hands and shake it.

philippe lejeune is coming to zeitgeist gallery again with his great skills performing boogie woogie, jazz and blues mixture to the piano.

french pianist philippe is a perfect example of blending boogie woogie jazz and blues which was an especially important strain in the jazz tradition. the young pianist attended a 1968 concert by master boogie-woogie and blues pianist memphis slim, and immediately began adding to his classical efforts, teaching himself the blues, scouring local record shops for recordings by boogie-woogie greats. his repertoire ranges from classic barrelhouseboogie-woogie piano to duke ellington and horace silver tunes.

carl ludwig hübsch - tuba
(kimmig - hübsch, post no bills, lester bowie`s brass fantasy, arthur blythe, schubert sextett, european tuba quartett, krämer hübsch wissel, vertrauensbildende massnahmen etc.)

carl ludwig hübsch

"my playing is focused on music as a structure in time. all focus is on the genesis of the moment. while emphasis and plot are fragmented and given the freedom of a new point of departure, utmost care is given to awareness of musical flow and continuity of the play. through the use of avant-garde and self-invented performance techniques, the tuba acquires completely new characteristics as a brass instrument. an innovative array of unexpected sounds is heard, the instrument is seen from a fresh perspective, and the audience is confronted with a novel way of perceiving time."

biography
born in 1966 in freiburg, carl ludwig hübsch began basic training in music at the age of five. he played clarinet in the local traditional band and at the same time started to play drums in punk and rockbands. around 83 he exchanged the clarinet for a tuba. lessons with w.erhart from the local orchestra followed. he experimented with all kinds of music including a incredibly bad dance music trio and a new orleans sextet.
the discovery of jazz and improvisation led to studies in improvisation with m.a.fataah.
received certification at the pedagogic college in freiburg in singing, theory, drums and electronic music.
in cologne studies of new music with johannes fritsch and tuba with h. gelhar. since 1990 carl ludwig hübsch has lived in cologne where he finally awarded a livelong stipendium from and for himself.
he composes and performs in concert halls, studios and theatres lending his talents to ensembles and orchestras. he`s well known for his unique solo concerts. he now concentrates on improvised music and composition. he also leads workshops for tuba and improvisation.

since 89 he performed with such renowned musicians as thomasz stanko, lester bowie, jasper van«t hof, paul lovens, ernst reijseger a.m.o. he was member of numerous projects as: • arthur blythe quartett 1992 • humanoise congress wiesbaden 1994 • hannes zerbe/willem breuker blech band • october orchestra amsterdam 1994 (featuring the icp ensemble and guests) • lester bowie`s brass fantasy 1995 and 1996 • realtimemusicmeeting 1999 • matthias schubert sextett 1997, jazzfest berlin. • 1997 studies with ramamani from the carnataka college of percussion • 2000 solistic part in the chamber opera "idyllen" by thomas beimel • 2000 tour to namibia • 2000 tour usa /w harald kimmig • since 1999 huebsch works with his own trio (w/m.schubert and w.wierbos). •2002 m.schubert quartett • 2002 omi-arts stipendium in the usa • 2003: "jazzpott " award • actually huebsch works on a quartett including frank gratkowski, axel dörner and michael griener.

huebsch«s work is documented in numerous radio and cd productions. carl ludwig hübsch has collected experience with theatre music in many productions in germany and abroad 1996 " blauzone", directed by beat fäh 2000 theaterhora/zürich + blauzone: "die lust am scheitern" (fun to fail) some theatre productions: schauspiel bonn •1999: john von dueffel«s "rinderwahnsinn" •2000: "balkonszenen" •2001: "othello.therapie" all directed by beat faeh. •landestheater linz 2001: "der kaufmann von venedig", directed by dominik von gunten. •wiesbaden 2002: "antilopen", henning mankell,r: b.fäh

upon completion of his solo cd carl ludwig hübsch turned his talents to ensemble work. his preference for wind instruments and lower frequencies has led to the formation of a high-calibre constellation: matthias schubert on tenorsaxophon and wolter wierbos, trombone, are participating in this challenging project. wellknown as improvisers and instrumentalists they contribute a unique awareness of new concepts.
all compositions are written especially for this trio making use of the characteristic play style of each musicians.
new music and of modern jazz influences pervade the program which combines the forces of restructured improvisation and composed elements.

cd- press rewiev:
"tuba, tenor saxophone, and trombone might appear to be an unusual combination for a full-length recording- and they are - but in the hands of carl ludwig hubsch and his mighty longrun development of the universe (the name of the group is as long as the names of players), the mix of instruments seems natural.
the trio entertains strategies on three pieces (the first is divided into four parts) during which abstract written parts contributed by huebsch weave a concentrated pull against freely improvised forays by the horns. there are fascinating blends of the two lower brass plus sax, leading to utterly delightful, sophisticated, yet fully listenable music. all three of the participants are comfortable with the language of free improvisation. there are no melodies, but that is a given for this genre of music.
wolter wierbos has, of course, distinguished himself as one of the leading modern trombonists with a technical mastery of his horn that is virtually unequalled. hubsch is lesser known, though he has excelled both in solo and group recordings, including his work with the european tuba quartet, of which he is a principal member. matthias schubert is also a touch obscure, but he fits here like a jigsaw puzzle, never stealing the spotlight. there is a chamber-like quality to some of the music, but that characterization is perhaps unfair, as there is a real attempt at originality that transcends pigeonholing.
there is a focus on highly complex written and improvisational lines that are hard to distinguish. individual soloing comes and goes, with masterful work by wierbos in particular. an outstanding and unusual release (not the least because of the instrumentation, but also due to the sophisticated orchestrations), carl ludwig huebsch's longrun development of the universe may not live up to the implicit ontological impiications of the group's name, but it produces a musical product for serious listening pleasure." steven loewy, cadence 1101

"timbuktoubab"
award-winning world music film (mali)
produced by blues guitarist markus james

Markus James and group 72 dpi.jpg

"timbuktoubab is that rare film in which a westerner ventures
into another culture and actually illuminates it, rather than
obscuring it behind a personal drama ... beautifully filmed,
richly narrated, and genuinely moving, this film puts meat
on the dry bones of the over-hyped but under-examined
'blues roots in africa' discourse."
(banning eyre, npr, afropop worldwide)

"markus james' celebration of the universality of legends and
spiritual themes is outdone only by his pleasure in working the
west african roots of the blues ...'timbuktoubab' ... played to sold-out,
soundly applauded screenings at the mill valley film festival."
(jeff kaliss, san francisco chronicle)

winner of the prestigious cine golden eagle award and featured in this year's san francisco world film festival, "timbuktoubab" aurally and visually captures the musical tone of the vast sahara, nourished for centuries by the waters of the niger, and successfully connects that ancestral feel to the traditional sounds of blues music rising up from the mississippi delta. the force behind the film "timbuktoubab" is virginia-raised blues guitarist markus james, who along with his malian collaborators hamma sankare (on calabash & vocals and known for his recordings and tours with with the legendary malian bluesman ali farka toure), hassi sare (on njarka violin & vocals) and solo sidibe (on kamele n'goni & vocals), passionately conjures up the spirit of the blues by immersing himself in mali's haunting music. the result is a creative meeting of cultures at the ancient source of blues music, and a transcendence into that musical plane beyond time and space. what is found there is beyond definition -- but the audience comes away knowing that it has just come to grips with common ground.

""few cross-cultural musical collaborations have been as pleasing and
fruitful as markus james' 'timbuktoubab' project...their music is
a language that they speak fluently, a language whose grammar
has been developing for centuries."
(marco werman, pri/bbc's "the world")

background information:
"timbuktoubab" [running time 54 min.] was filmed in the sand dunes and villages in and around timbuktu, mali. it combines live performances, impressionistic music video sequences, travels to niafounke, and interviews with songhai master musicians hamma sankare and hassi sare in their native dialect of sonrai (a film first). "timbuktoubab" is a visually rich documentary of markus james' unique and ongoing collaborations with three masters of traditional malian music. the group has come together several times in the ancient multi-cultural crossroads of timbuktu, to live and work together, writing songs and eventually giving their first public performance for the people of timbuktu. in recent news, the film "timbuktoubab" has received the cine golden eagle award and will be featured in october's san francisco world film festival and in the mt. shasta international film festival. for more information go to www.timbuktoubab.com.

markus james, originally from virginia and the dc area, first encountered west african stringed music at the smithsonian folklife festival where he was mesmerized by the gambian kora player and singer, alhaji bai konte. after playing in various rock and r&b groups, james moved to the sf bay area where he pursued his interests in african, indian, and gamelan music, while also writing and recording original music in various rock styles. he traveled in west africa and also haiti, studying traditional ensemble drumming, before first visiting mali in 1994, when he made his way to the village of niafounke to meet ali farka toure. it was then that he first recorded with wassoulou musician solo sidibe, and this became the "where you wanna be" album, released 6 years later. he has produced several programs for pri's afropop worldwide, notably "ali farka toure: live >from niafounke." james has returned to mali many times, where he has written and recorded blues-influenced music with traditional malian musicians, notably his 2002 release "nightbird", and "timbuktoubab" which have been warmly received by critics in the us and europe (please see review quotes below). his collaborations in timbuktu with hamma sankare (calabash player on ali farka toure's tours and albums), hassi sare (master of the one-stringed njarka violin), and solo sidibe (who plays the kamele n'goni, the hunter's harp of the wassoulou people) are the subject of the documentary film "timbuktoubab". this group has performed at the festival in the desert in 2003 and 2004, as well as in timbuktu and other towns and villages in northern mali. in the us, markus tours with the wassonrai, featuring wassoulou musician mamadou sidibe, and amadou camara. they have performed on numerous radio shows, including pri / bbc's "the world," at festivals, and in clubs. markus james' new cd "calabash blues" is due out in october. it is a compilation of original blues songs with the sounds and feel of the malian roots of the blues: 7 new tracks alongside highlights from his critically acclaimed "nightbird" and "timbuktoubab" albums. it features songhai calabash master hamma sankare on calabash, who has been a driving force on the recordings and tours of grammy-winning malian bluesman ali farka toure. for more information on markus james and his projects, log onto www.firenzerecords.com/ [photos: www.firenzerecords.com/epkbio.html].
other local appearances:
markus james and the wassonrai will be performing live at
johnny d's on sat., october 22d, at 9:30 pm.
they will also be featured on wumb's "live at noon" on
thurs. october 20th.

"a vital mix of the mississippi delta and mali, a cultural exchange
of haunting beauty and mystery."
(blues revue magazine)

"i was so delighted to bring to you the fine musicianship of
markus james. his original approach to blues music combining
american roots blues with west african roots music is
such a soul filled experience.
they created some magical music."

gutbucket
“dry humping the american dream”

paul chuffo (drums), ty citerman (guitar), eric rockwin (bass) ken thomson (saxophone)

gutbucket is a free-range band. the five-year-old new york quartet is not only equally comfortable playing in front of 900 sweatily pogo-ing teenage skate-punks, or a crowd of stoned jamband freaks, or on an anarchist german art collective houseboat, but also – most importantly – their music fits right in, too. on dry humping the american dream, the band the village voice dubbed “stomprovisors” thrashes and twitches (sometimes literally) through 10 cartoonishly complex compositions, injecting a shot of glorious spazmitude into the minimalist cool of bang on a can’s hep cantaloupe label. flitting from latin to thrash to polka to klezmer and back, often within the space of a few bars, the group veritably attacks their music with the kind of ferocity usually reserved for punk, despite having earned their jazz bona fides. “we’re all pretty serious about rock,” says saxophonist ken thomson, “and not just a token throwing-in of some different tunes. it’s something intrinsic to who we are as people. we’ve all had training in jazz, but we’d like to move outside that world into the rock world, and actually bring something new to that.” though the band might seem rooted in the genre exploding of avant-squonk (their 2001 debut, insomniacsdream, was released on the knitting factory house imprint, while dry humping the american dream was issued in europe on the legendary enja label), this might be an easier move than it sounds.

the four band members are, if nothing else, products of suburban radio. bassist eric rockwin claims to have learned every paul mccartney bassline by heart before his father humbled him with a ray brown cd. guitarist ty citerman was “into everything that was hendrix and van halen and led zeppelin.” and drummer paul chuffo learned to play by mimicking the who’s keith moon. it’s only fitting, then, that the band came together under the auspices of columbia university’s wkcr, where ty had a late-night radio show and paul was the self-admitted “crazy guy in the corner smoking cigarettes and writing papers.” after playing together for four years in the soul-jazz ex caminos, ty, ken, and paul split off in 1999 to form what would become gutbucket. introduced through a friend, eric and paul found an instant rhythmic rapport, and the band was born. four months later, they debuted before a packed house at manhattan’s baby jupiter. gutbucket set to work building the all-important live rep, gigging first throughout manhattan, before spreading across the collegiate markets of the east coast and –with the release of insomniacsdream - making the leap over the big pond to europe in 2001. “they think we’re jazz over there,” ty says of the idyllic trips.

zeitgeist halloween party!

ambient/ethereal/experimental/noise
6:30 pm - 12 midnite
$5 donation suggested

Halloween party at the Zeitgeist featuring 6 ambient/ethereal/experimental/noise acts! There will be free food, candy, and ghostly potions served between sets. Assume an exotic identity for the occasion, or just come and melt into the atmosphere...

Red Skies [7:00 - 7:40] - Eastern-tinged underwater-sounding guitar and vocal ambience from Jinsen (of the band 28 Degrees Taurus) and friends...

Lauri des Marais & Kris Thompson [7:55 - 8:35] - Lauri des Marais' compositions are primarily synthesized streams between shape, mood, and pattern-texture construction which create what she calls "Stories in Sound". Des Marais began playing piano in 1994, and eventually began recording with synthesizers and "musique concrète" techniques. For live performance, she developed a form of movement she calls Movement So Still With Sound -- incorporating themes of traditional Eastern movement -- to translate the often subtle dimensional qualities of her music. Accompanying on ethereal theremin is Kris Thompson from local bands The Lothars and Dear Old Stockholm Syndrome. His past projects include Abunai!, Nisi Period and The Prefab Messiahs.

Wisteriax [8:55 - 9:25] - ambient/experimental cello run through a bevy of effects

Rob Byrd [9:40 - 10:15] - evocative ambient guitar improv

Sun Rushing In [10:30 - 11:15] - a duo consisting of Lauri des Marais and Susan DeLeo. Beautiful, seductive and creepy pieces with an ambient sound collage foundation.

Turkish Queen [11:25 - 12:00] - an experimental duo out of Boston, MA. They formed in the sultry summer of 2002, through a mutual love of sound, texture, and technical wizardry. Their cinematic melodies wrap around your ears like a slow-creeping vine, invoking an eerie sea of sound. Evocative female vocals reveal themselves like a lifeline on a palm touched by sepia-stained fingers, portraying intriguing characters and the human condition.

With Dr. T on live video mixing throughout!
