For the next installment of the Kabarett 16-Bit, the Ominous Collective welcome electro-punk superheroes Livesexact! A mix of ketars, synths and the vocal assault of Alexplosive, they are best summed up by the band’s own mission; “Livesexact returns the energy, power & spectacle of live performance to the realm of electronic music, reformulating the band’s relationship with its audience, so that, ultimately, _everyone_ gets to GET DOWN!”

Originally scheduled to perform in our May but unable to do so because of conflicting issues, Collective member and poet Edward J. Carvalho makes his second appearance with the Kabarett in June. He is a twice-nominated Pushcart Prize writer (2004-2005) who has been writing poetry for 15 years. Edward’s poetry is often described as having a style that is ‘original, innovative, imaginative and brutal.’

Also appearing that night are Optic Rose, an industrial band from New Hampshire with a very dark and distinctive sound, and Leah Callahan’s Illegitimate Theatre Company. As always, Jutta will be on hand to make sure the evening is kept out of control.

$7

Woodwind/percussion/electronics duo Enuma Elish will be performing at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge, Ma on Thursday, June 16th at 7:00pm in support of its latest release on Lithiq, “Leviathan.” Enuma Elish, whose latest release has been described by Britain’s Ptolemaic Terrascope Magazine as a “glorious psychedelic jazz noise” and being a “Eric Dolphy meets Bitches Brew” hybrid by Canada’s Exclaim Magazine, has been performing throughout the Northeast and beyond since 1999, and are making a rare appearance at the Zeitgeist.

Formed in 1999, Enuma Elish was born of a vision to create a cohesive synthesis of world music, free jazz, and electronica. Enuma Elish are distinguished from most live/electronic hybrids by their use of loops created from original field recordings, acoustic percussion, ethnic strings and winds, in addition to conventional electronic instruments. This exotic sound palette provides the backdrop for Warren’s volcanic excursions on his various wind instruments while Yuri churns a mind-bending assault on his electronically triggered acoustic drumset. Together, they are charting a new course for instrumental music that employs, yet greatly exceeds the bounds of the established genres from which their music is generated.

The roots of Italian Folk Music

As everybody knows Italy has a very old and
prestigious classical tradition. How many people are
familiar with the Folk songs played by the farmers in
the Neapolitans suburbs while Giacomo Puccini or
Giuseppe Verdi were performing their operas for the
Italian high society? How many people have heard
traditional instruments such as Tamorra or Putipu?

Newpoli is an Italian Folk Group with two
percussionists, two guitars and three singers, all
swathed in rich colors of the past, whose purpose is
to rediscover all the wonderfully “uneducated” music
played on the rhythms of Tammurriata, Tarantella or
Pizzica.

Folk Legend
MICHAEL HURLEY

with guest
Apothecary Hymns

Michael Hurley is one of the last remaining American rambling folk troubadours. Hobo-ing around the country, playing music since the days Bob Dylan first set foot in New York City’s Gaslight club, Hurley recorded his first album for Moses Ash’s legendary Folkways label in 1964. This debut album, First Songs, has recently been reissued on Locust Music under the “new,” and originally intended title, Blueberry Wine. Hurley continued to release albums for both Warner Brothers and Rounder. His mid-70s Have Moicy album was selected among the top 10 for the decade by Rolling Stone magazine. Hurley’s latest albums — Weatherhole and Sweetkorn — show no sign of artistic decline and garnered rave reviews. While many of his contemporaries are long past their prime or have expired, Hurley’s muse is still intact. Hurley’s songwriting talent is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by new a generation of musicians. In recent years, Hurley was invited to tour with alt-country heroes Son Volt and Lucinda Williams. He’s also shared bills with Smog, Sunburned Hand of the Man, and Palace Brothers, played with the Giant Sand rhythm section, and his songs have been covered by indie stars Cat Power and Yo La Tengo. Whether he’s playing a cracked country blues number about space travel on his fretless banjo, an Appalachian children’s song like “Shortening Bread” on his fiddle, or plunking his heartbreakers on his beloved Gibson guitar, on stage Hurley’s charms never fail to captivate an audience. (Frank van den Elzen)

With a treasure trove of analogue, swirling effects, arch songcraft and a sweet yet assured vocal delivery, trowel & era brings to the table the epic, debut long-player by the one-man band Apothecary Hymns (aka Alex Stimmel). Stimmel has made a collection with one foot in kaleidoscopic coastal loner psych that floats on a musical bed of whimsical levity and another foot rooted firmly in the grand ethos of East Village troubadours of the mid 60s. Apothecary Hymns is Alex Stimmel—acoustic & electric guitars, 6 & 12 string guitars, banjo, bass, drums, wurlitzer, analog synth, organ, flute, recorder, kalimba (African finger piano), autoharp, glockenspiel, voice, & tape manipulation.

esmerine ; http://www.esmerine.com/reviews.html

“bruce cawdron and beckie foon obviously can’t get enough. not content with their roles in the guitar-driven godspeed you! black emperor, a silver mt. zion and set fire to flames, they collaborate on this first release as esmerine with the intent of exploring similar territories to the various godspeed splinters while leaving the guitars in their flight cases. subsequently, ‘if only…’ is built around minimal, chiming percussion and cello lines, bringing melody to the fore and allowing these eight pieces to drift by as clouds in a dreamscape. the hooks are in the mind of the listener, none of these pieces impose themselves, requiring you to unplug the telly and close your eyes. to do so is to enter a world of technicolour beauty, untroubled by war and politics. in short, esmerine are the perfect antidote for our times.” gillian nash, logo magazine

in gowan ring

Nick Castro: “A Spy in the House of God” is the devotional songwriting headswirler you didn’t know you were after, with the personality, chops, magic, and utter magnificence to back it up. Castro is in full command of his sonic tapestries, and wowed all at the Million Tongues fest in Chicago this past August…” (Steve Krakow/Plastic Crimewave) Nick Castro is a psychedelic folk musician from California. Something of a self-taught musicologist, Nick began studying music at a young age. His music is an unusual and eclectic mix of styles spanning many eras of American and World music. His technical prowess as a musician lends itself to Nick’s unique songwriting style. This show will feature Otto Hauser of Espers on percussion and guitar.

One reviewer described the music of Fern Knight as: “folk-noir with a high spook factor from the woods of Providence…infinitely lonely tissue paper singing…with the devil of the blues in [singer Margie Wienk’s] throat…a mournful cello saws its way through the ears directly into one’s heart.”

In Gowan Ring fits into the “apocalyptic folk” category, but at the same time is removed enough not to sound either derivative or too similar. . . . What strikes me most about this CD is its unwavering sincerity. The whole package. . . is wonderfully constructed. . ..B’eirth’s singing has a quiet lyricism, never forced in the least. The instrumentation is very organic, the drones don’t seem to be synthesized, and so have a very human quality to them. The music has a medieval flavor to it, but In Gowan Ring’s style is never overblown. Every note is carefully placed, and never hurried. There is also a delicacy inherent on The Glinting Spade which ties together its ballad and drone qualities. I’ll go so far as to call this album beautiful. Everything about it shimmers, and lets off a lovely golden glow.” (Ink19)
