The Ominous Collective return with the fourth installment of the Kabarett 16-Bit. This month features collective members Specimen 37 performing their own brand of “Psychetronic Rock”. This will be their first performance in the Kabarett and we expect a spectacular display of lights, video and sensory assault.
Returning will be poet and Collective member Edward J. Carvalho. He is a twice-nominated Pushcart Prize writer (2004-2005) who has been writing poetry for 15 years. Edward’s poetry is often described as having a style that is ‘original, innovative, imaginative and brutal.’ Also slated are performances by Leah Callahan’s Illegitimate Theatre Company and the Imo’an Performance Troupe. Jazz Weekly.com
Somewhere in the world, it’s still 1969, and jazz musicians are creating
protracted improvisations that reference the unknowns of outer space and
the percussive tradition of ancient civilizations… First constituted under the leadership of drummer Dennis Warren in the late 1980s, the FMRJE has grown and shifted personnel over the years with such outstanding players as saxophonist Glenn Spearman, trumpeter/composer Raphe Malik and guitarist Tor Snyder in the fold… Warren, who studied with Black music theorists like trumpeter Bill Dixon and drummer Milford Graves, was around to experience the tail end of that Free Jazz psychedelic epoch.

Reviews of Carefully Taught (Skydancer2002)
“I know Ruthie Ristich to be a big hearted, highly
intelligent woman with a warm, honey toned singing
voice and a wide range of interests and curiosity
about the world. Anyone who digs fine jazz vocals,
expert highly musical accompaniment with a dash of
African, Latin music flavor should love this CD.”
Bob Moses
Rakalam
“Ruthie gives new life to this material with her
intelligent phrasing, great sense of humor and acute
musicianship. She is one of my favorites!!!”
Mili Bermejo
“Ruthie has been a favorite of mine since the first
time I heard her sing; clearly intelligent,
insightful, delightfully innovative, and always an
artistic joy!”
Rebecca Parris
“Ms. Ristich knows what she wants, and how to get it.
She also has an unerring ear for great material. Her
relaxed, personal delivery makes it seem easy; her
compelling arrangements, and the wonderful musicians
she works with are a delight. Bravo Ruthie!
Carefully Taught is a gem.”
Brian Flick, Jazz Director KPBX-FM (Spokane,
Washington)
… a few words from the fans…
“It’s rhythmic and I like the words.” Ruth Pullen
Ristich, age 88
“The opener and closer tunes were great. I really
liked the treatment of the last tune especially (Never
Never Land). Your voice sounds quite ethereal.”
Debra Mann
“We are loving it. I especially like the last 3 pieces
(For All We Know, Where is Love, and Never Never
Land). You were wise to put in some songs that are not
too familiar to people and you give them your own
special treatment. You have certainly added a new
dimension to “bending” a note. It’s Nice Weather for
Ducks is also a favorite.”
Jim Jackson
“When Ruthie sings with her band, she reaches onto the
crowded dance floor, making this her community
outreach and a musical kinetic happening. She’s
something else—-terrific!” Lee Fernandez
“I think my favorite, if I had to pick one, is “Where
is Love?” It’s wistful
simplicity touches me deeply.” Eric Martin

Combining talents, Silent Mind (NJ,USA) & Gabby Young
(Wiltshire,England) have set out after a tour of Europe for their
“Who Are They” summer tour. Having met via internet these two
artists were immediately drawn to each others sound. Finding their
styles to be equally unique they began collaborating on each others
music through the internet and phone. Gabby Young has been compared
to the likes of Jeff Buckley, Joni Mitchell, and Janis Joplin. Jamie
Bright has been compared to Elliot Smith, Radiohead, and an acoustic
Foo Fighters.
Michelle Lewis:::

Michelle Lewis is a Boston folk artist who has been writing and performing
original music since the age of 14. Since getting her degree from Berklee
College of Music in Spring 2003, Michelle has recorded her debut
album, “This Time Around”, toured the east and west coasts, and made live
radio appearances in Nevada, Florida, and California. Her unique style of in-
your-face acoustic folk rock blends vivid imagery with charismatic melodies
that appeal to audiences of all ages, genders and musical tastes.

Mili Bermejo, voice/composer; Vardan Ovsepian, piano; Dan Greenspan, bass
Veteran Boston-based vocalist/composer Mili Bermejo will make her Zeitgeist Gallery debut with her trio on Sunday, May 22nd at 4pm. The group, which now features noted local pianist and Fresh Sound New Talent recording artist Vardan Ovsepian, will be performing selections from its 2004 release, A Time for Love (Pentagrama).
Jon Garelick of the Boston Phoenix calls Ms. Bermejo “a special figure: a composer and vocalist who combines the folkloric traditions of South America, the Caribbean, and her native Mexico with the modern pop of those regions and American jazz. This is not pastiche-world music but an integrated artistic vision. She’s also a wonderful singer who can convey the meaning of her songs in all languages.” Her thoughtful and powerfully affirmative music for this intimate, drummer-less jazz trio was inspired by personal experiences related to the loss of two close family members and recent social/political unrest around the world.
“Mili Bermejo remains one of the most, if not the absolutely most, emotive singer of Latin Jazz music currently recording,” wrote Cadence reviewer Alan Bargebuhr. “[She is] the Latin equivalent of Abbey Lincoln…a singer/composer who challenges us with her musical honesty.” Boston Magazine’s James Isaacs described her style as “part poetry-folk, part Sarah Vaughn sophistication” and the Boston Globe’s Bob Blumenthal called her music the place “where jazz meets Latin with elegance and soul.” A 20-year veteran of the Berklee College of Music faculty, and the first woman to receive the prestigious Achievement in Jazz Award from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), Ms. Bermejo is also the recipient of multiple grants from Meet the Composer and a former Jazz Ambassador for the United States Information

‘60s ESP Records piano legend
BURTON GREENE with ED SCHULLER - drums
“BURTON GREENE ranks as one of the seasoned survivors in creative improvised music. Like a handful of his ESP (Records) peers he’s still at it after all these years, plugging away at his craft and creating chameleonic music along the way… Greene sounds great as well, foraging over the finely tuned ivories with a self-assurance and acuity ideally suited to the auspicious surroundings.”
-Derek Taylor, All About Jazz.
He arrived in New York in 1962 and formed probably the first spontaneous composition group with bassist Alan Silva in ‘63: The Free Form Improvisation Ensemble. He joined the Jazz Composers Guild in ‘64 (organized by Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor) and formed his first recorded quartet in ‘65 which included Marion Brown and Henry Grimes. He performed in New York in the 1960’s with such people as Sam Rivers, Rashied Ali, Albert Ayler, Patty Waters, Byard Lancaster, Gato Barbieri, etc. Burton was involved with the New Music Concert Series in Town Hall and YMHA organized by Max Pollikoff which included panel discussions with Morton Feldman and Earl Brown.
Burton has collaborated with many musicians; among them are John Tchicai, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Willem Breuker, Han Bennink, Keshavan Maslak, Sunny Murray, Frank Wright, Sean Bergin, Paul Stocker, Theo Loevendie, Martin van Duynhoven, Clarence Becton, Perry Robinson, Roswell Rudd, Tjitze Vogel, Raoul van der Weide, Tom Jones, Tobias Delius, Michael Moore, Akki Hak, Lou Grassi, Wilber Morris, Roy Campbell, Mark Dresser, etc., etc.
