six organs of admittance

the critique of pure reason presents:

six organs of admittance
(with special guest chris corsano on drums)
PG Six opens
doors open at 9:30pm
all ages
$7-9
please, no large bags! this show is going to be really crowded.
let’s use the space for people and not possessions.

the critique of pure reason is happy to welcome back six organs of admittance (aka Ben Chasny), who is touring in support of his amazing new cd, School of the Flower (Drag City records).

Perhaps inspired by the east-meets-west solo guitar musings of John Fahey or Robbie Basho, guitarist Ben Chasny formed Six Organs of Admittance in 1998 in northern California. Six Organs’ self-titled, self-released debut was released that year, followed by various compilation tracks and obscurities. In 2000, Six Organs released the Manifestation EP (Ba Da Bing! records), a one-sided, clear, vinyl-only release consisting of one extended piece, and featuring female vocals and varied percussion accompanying the centerpiece of Chasny’s guitar. Also in 2000, Dust and Chimes was released; the second full-length from Six Organs, it featured raga-like guitar work surrounded by bells, chimes (as the name implies), drones, and Chasny’s multi-tracked, chant-style vocals. In 2003 Casny began an association with Comets on Fire which led to him becoming a full-time touring and recording member of the band. He also released Compathia (Holy Mountain Records) and two titles for Time-Lag—a CD reissue of 1999’s limited-edition Nightly Trembling, and the landmark For Octavio Paz. (allmusic guide)

Somewhere in between the syrupy sweet vocals of Sam Beam’s Iron & Wine with the atmospheric and psychedelic folk that is prevalent in the work of Ben Chasny’s Six Organs of Admittance, you will undoubtedly find young PG Six quietly strumming his guitar and singing about lost loves and the intricacies involved in relationships. PG Six recalls an older sound. Obscure British folk is the obvious reference point considering the conversational and occasionally poetic nature of PG Six’s lyrics. (Tiny Mix Tapes)

Early: The Ominous Collective

7pm-9pm
$6 donation

On Saturday March 5 the Ominous Collective will bring you the second in a series of residencies for the Collective at the Zeitgeist Gallery this time with brand new Ominous Collective members HUMANWINE, The Imo’an Performance Troupe, The Illegitimate Theatre Company, Thylacine and some friends from outside the Ominous Collective, Blitzkreigbliss. MC will be the illustrious Jutta.

HUMANWINE is a two and a half month old band that just moved to Boston. They blend the carnivalesque theatricality of recent trendsetters The Dresden Dolls (HUMANWINE vocalist Holly was once a member of a traveling circus); a radical left political stance (their name refers to a Matrix-like siphoning of the proletariat) and some serious genre bending with their capacity to turn from avant-garde jazz to metal to goth in a matter of moments. Come see them before everyone else knows about them.

Blitzkreigbliss is another brand spanking new band. The Noise revered them in a recent review likening the vocalist Sophia to Patti Smith. She will be performing a stripped down set as will Thylacine, who mesmerized the packed house at the last Ominous Collective show. Also performing short (but not necessarily sweet) sets will be The Imo’an Performance Troupe and The Illegitimate Theatre Company. MC Jutta will get this arty party started at 7 p.m and finish it at 9 sharp.

Jazz
7pm - 9pm

Boston-based pianist/composer Marc Rossi’s long-standing progressive jazz ensemble performs his accessible yet sophisticated compositions, which blend strong melodies with worldly elements such as exotic time signatures, Indian modes and ragas, and Afro-Latin rhythms. His eclectic approach to writing music stems from a diverse background that includes not only extensive work as a jazz performer, but also as a contemporary classical composer and longtime student of both Hindustani and Carnatic Indian music.

Called “one of the dynamic few whose musical and cultural awareness travels exponentially in many different directions,” by DownBeat magazine, Rossi has been an integral part of the Boston music scene as both performer and educator for more than two decades. His long career includes extended associations with groups like Stan Strickland and Ascension, the Jimmy Guiffre 4, and George Russell’s Grammy®-nominated Living Time Orchestra. Along with the Marc Rossi Group, which he has led since 1981, his own projects have included innovative duos with sitarist Peter Row and pianist/composer Ben Schwendener, as well as premieres of his classical works in legendary venues like Symphony Hall and Dvorak Hall in Prague. More information is available at http://www.marcrossi.com

“Rossi has been building a reputation playing in truly diverse musical environs…His music is full of surprises.”—Bob Young, Boston Herald

“Rossi has never been someone of one-dimensional interests. The list of both jazz and classical compositions he has written is long and impressive.”—David Wildman, Boston Globe

Planet Earth:

Nathan Bleehar Sax
Phil Grenier Bass
Ziv Ravitz Drums

For their third installment at the Zeitgeist, the Troglodytes harvest four new songs: Jack Mackerel (inspired by Richard Brautigan), Rinse (inspired by Steve-o), Rodney Strong (inspired by the red wine at Andrew’s sister’s wedding), and the Bloody Sled (inspired by real life icy carnage in Jamaica Plain). The past month, while Tyler and Ziv (seperately) toured the galaxy, Andrew often meditated while listening to the Adventage (a nintendo music cover band) on repeat. The result of this seemingly wasted time is the Trog’s newest cover: Bomberman 2. Grab your joysticks.

The concert begins with Jeremy Udden’s Planet Earth. One can expect originals and covers from the likes of Sun Ra, Stereolab, Eliot Krimsky, and Radiohead. Their music is as peaceful and grounded as their name might suggest. Ziv will once again go the distance.

The Dan Tepfer Trio
modern jazz piano trio

Dan Tepfer - piano
Jorge Roeder - double bass
Richie Barshay - drums

In the last two months, the Dan Tepfer Trio has travelled as far as Japan and the West Coast to spread the good word about their brand-new CD, Before the Storm. And even the Japanese loved it! A regular presence at the Zeitgeist, the trio is back for a special Sunday matinee show. Their last gig at the Zeitgeist was a Boston Globe “Jazz Pick”, and Dan was called “one of tomorrow’s jazz stars” by the Oregonian. In past concerts at the Zeitgeist, the Dan Tepfer Trio has revealed a rare mix of exuberance and introspection that even within complex rhythmic and harmonic explorations, is always deeply musical.

Dan Tepfer (piano) is a masters student at the New England Conservatory, where he studies with Danilo Pérez and Bob Brookmeyer. He grew up studying classical piano and playing jazz in Paris, France. Most recently he has played with Chris Potter and Christian McBride.

« Dan Tepfer is a very impressive young pianist and composer. He plays fearlessly, intensely and with great sensitivity.» — FRED HERSCH

Jorge Roeder (double bass) was born in Lima, Peru. Also a student at NEC, he has studied with Cecil McBee, John Lockwood, and Oscar Stagnaro and played with Alex Acuna, Kenny Wheeler, and Bill Watrous.

Richie Barshay (drums) performs regularly with Herbie Hancock, George Garzone, Jane Bunnett, and numerous other freelance projects. Currently based in Boston, he is completing a bachelor’s degree at NEC.

Blue Sky Research - 1st set

Amphis Baena - 2nd set

AMPHIS BÆNA (pronounced am-fis bay-nuh) performs distinctive, creative music
that blends Jazz, Rock and Electronic Music. The trio’s loose, spirited songs have
been affectionately described as “sophisticated Garage-rock,” stemming from the dynamic interaction between the group combined with deceptively simple forms. Alto sax lines sail above distorted keyboards and digital pads while crisp beats propel ever-evolving grooves that slip into hyper-rhythmic breakbeats. AMPHIS BÆNA produces highly energetic shows that move audiences across genres, recognizing the influences of artists like Björk, Keith Jarrett, Ani DiFranco and Squarepusher.

AMPHIS BÆNA is Brian Scherman (alto sax, electronics), Jarrett Cherner
(keyboards) and Adam Clark (drums, laptop). Sharing the stage with them is BLUE SKY RESEARCH. Hailing from the Southwest, the Midwest and South Asia respectively, BLUE SKY RESEARCH has been pleasing audiences and peers alike with their tasteful blend of musical elements and influences. Performances throughout New England and a recent Midwest tour have yielded glowing reviews from fans, who likened them to such eclectic musicians as Norah Jones, Björk, James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. This band puts a fresh face on jazz, paying homage in their compositions to the blues, folk and rock they were raised on, always with a spirit of adventure and ingenuity. BLUE SKY RESEARCH is Sunny Kim (vocals, processing), Camille Jentgen (keyboards, vocals), Bridget
Kearney (Bass, vocals) and Adam Clark (drums, percussion).
