Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the True Loves are a seven piece band that play their own unique take on downhome Rhythm & Blues and Soul music. Reed fronts the band playing guitar (sometimes harmonica) and singing in a stage show that is made up of originals reworkings of obscure R & B songs to fit the band’s idiosyncratic style. Every member of the band brings a different element to the
table; and traces of Country, Avante-Garde Jazz, Gospel and Delta Blues make for an energetic and unpredictable show. www.elipaperboyreed.com

RAQIB HASSAN - tenor sax
FORBES GRAHAM - trumpet
ANDREI MATORIN - violin
ERIC ZINMAN - piano
JOHN VOIGT - bass viol
TREVOR DANIEL - african percussion
RAKALAM BOB MOSES - trap drums

Suntologist Raqib Hassan, who is a Sufi Dervish of the Nimatullahi order, plays a flotilla of double-reed instruments from around the world (in addition to tenor saxophone). He studied music theory and harmony with saxophonist Bill Thomson, further theoretical studies with Archie Shepp and Roland Wiggins.

Raqib worked in New York with bass violinist Hakim Jami and percussionist Rashied Ali. Raqib had produced the series of Sun Ra memorial concerts here in Boston with his orchestra, the Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra. He is currently producing and has produced his music on his independent label “AUSM Recordings”, AUSM standing for African Universal Sun Music.

“I first met Raqib in the Summer of 1979 through bass violinist Hakim Jami, manager of the Ladies Fort, a club, now defunct, originally founded by jazz vocalist Joe Lee Wilson. We performed that year together in Tompkins Square in Greenwich Village with Mr. Jami’s band. At Raqib’s invitation we reunited in 1990 to perform downstairs at the Middle East Restaurant in Cambridge alongside additional locally based musicians. Raqib is a welcome addition to the ever growing pool of composer/musicians on the planet. I commend his commitment to the spiritual and musical development.”
- Rashied Ali

“I have known Mr. Hassan for more than a decade. He studied music performance and theory with me. He is knowledgeable about the styles of all the players from Parker to Albert Ayler. He possesses an approach - a musical philosophy of his own which is both unique and original. I wish him well in his endeavors.”
- Archie Shepp

FOURMINUSONE

“FourMinusOne has figured out a way to celebrate freedom while preserving
form, and to balance rhythmic flexibility and strength. It is a listening,
responsive trio where everyone excels and no one dominates.”
— Bob Blumenthal (Grammy Award-winning Jazz Writer)

“FourMinusOne grooves with a rockin’ sound… Split Decision wonderfully
captures FourMinusOne’s hard-driving sound, one that uses the framework of
serious, melodic compostion as a starting point for free-jazz explorations.”
— Steve Greenlee (Boston Globe)

In 1998 FourMinusOne was formed. Born in Boston and brewed in the
Northeastern U.S., the band brings together three unique individuals with different backgrounds creating music imbued with passion, energy, and groove. Sam Thomas, Ippei Ichimaru, and Eric Platz are its creators. Saxophone, bass, and drums is the starting point - but you never know where the music will take you.

In FourMinusOne you hear elements from spontaneous and original composition, infusing rock, jazz, acid jazz, klezmer, and North and West African music — you hear the world coming together.

MORRIS / GRAY / VANDERMARK : american improvisations

Joe Morris – guitar
Luther Gray – drums
Ken Vandermark – tenor sax

KEN VANDERMARK ON THE TRIO:
“The trio with Joe came out of our discussions during the last couple of
years about organizing a specific project together, a place to develop an
ongoing way to work, and this group is the result of those talks. When I go
out East to visit family in mid January, I’ll also be getting together with
Joe and Luther to rehearse, and to perform at the Zeitgeist Gallery in
Boston on Friday the 21st. With this band Joe and I are interested in
investigating new methods of working with free improvisation, approaches
based more on “American” improvisation models than the ones that have been
developed primarily in Europe. The idea itself is going to take some real
effort to clarify (Joe’s suggestion that I look at the photography of Walker
Evans sounds like a brilliant place to start). However, by asking questions
about what the idea of being an “American improviser” means in this period,
it should be possible to find some new ways of expressing ourselves - and
that idea alone makes the trio worth pursuing.”

JOE MORRIS - guitar
In 1981 he began what would be a six year collaboration with the
multi-instrumentalist Lowell Davidson, performing with him in a trio and a
duo. During the next few years in Boston he performed in groups which
featured among others; Billy Bang, Andrew Cyrille, Peter Kowald, Joe McPhee,
Malcolm Goldstein, Samm Bennett, Lawrence “Butch” Morris and Thurman Barker.

Between 1987 and 1989 he lived in New York City where he performed at the
Shuttle Theater, Club Chandelier, Visiones, Inroads, Greenwich House, etc.
as well as performing with his trio at the first festival Tea and
Comprovisation held at the Knitting Factory.

Since 1993 he has recorded and/or performed with among others; Matthew
Shipp, William Parker, Joe and Mat Maneri, Rob Brown, Raphe Malik, Ivo
Pearlman, Borah Bergman, Andrea Parkins, Whit Dickey, Ken Vandermark, DKV
Trio, Karen Borca, Eugene Chadborne, Susie Ibarra, Hession/Wilkinson/Fell,
Roy Campbell Jr., John Butcher, Aaly Trio, Hamid Drake, Fully Celebrated
Orchestra and others.

www.joe-morris.com

some quotes on Joe Morris:

“One of the most profound improvisors at work in the U.S.”
WILL MONTGOMERY, THE WIRE
“If Ornette Coleman were Jim Hall, he would be Joe Morris.”
GARY GIDDINS, THE VILLAGE VOICE
“. . . the guitar revolutionary to pay attention to.”
NORMAN WINSTEIN, THE BOSTON PHOENIX
“. . . the most exciting and original jazz plucker to emerge in the last
decade.”
JJOHN CORBETT, DOWNBEAT
“. . . a guitarist whose sound is completely his own, oscillating between
deadpan sweetness and dangerous, shrapnel-like caprice.”
K. LEANDER WILLIAMS, THE VILLAGE VOICE

KEN VANDERMARK – tenor sax, reeds
Ken moved to Chicago in the fall of 1989 and is now working with a variety
of improvised music ensembles, including the Vandermark 5, FME, the
Territory Band, the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, Sonore, the
Nilssen-Love/Vandermark Duo, Free Fall, and Bridge 61, as well as working as
an individual soloist.

Aside from the schools of music influenced by the history of jazz, his work
has been greatly impacted by a diverse range of other sources; such as
Mississippi Fred McDowell, James Brown, John Cage, the Ex, Morton Feldman,
Lee Perry, and various traditional musics from around the world.

http://www.kenvandermark.com/

LUTHER GRAY – drums
Drummer Luther Gray is one of the most creative and swinging drummers in
Boston today, and is at the center of a large group of musicians who rely on
him to keep things moving in the right direction. Luther is hosting various
ensembles every Wednesday in February at the MIM series at Artists At Large
in Hyde Park (see link, below).

Rick Della Ratta, internationally renowned jazz pianist, headlines the Jazz For Peace concert tour benefiting the Malaika Project.
Malaika Project: a multidisciplinary community based project in Nyamuswa, Tanzania. Nyamuswa is a small town just west of the famous Serengeti National Park. We work in partnership with local people, helping to improve living conditions from the ground up with local contributions and an international collaboration. The community decides for themselves what their priorities are, demonstrates a commitment with local resources, and Malaika Project brings in volunteers and funding towards the common goals of reducing mortality, improving literacy, and helping the local economy to grow.

The Malaika Project works with the entire community regardless of ethnicity, religion, or politics through both private and public collaboration. The hope of the Malaika Project is to improve local capacity through these partnerships to make lasting improvements in the quality of life of community members.

STEPH TAYLOR - solo piano & guitar
EMILY WHITE 3 - guitar/drum/bass
Emily White and Steph Taylor take woman rock to an entirely new level. Incorporating heart-wrenching personal lyrics with twisted and lively guitar and piano styles, it is difficult to pigeonhole these unique artists. This is definitely a show worth experiencing.
