Find out what happens when Jesus returns amidst the current war/terrorist hysteria. Watch him do battle with militarism, corporate media, PC liberals, and the right-wing.
Will Bush/Cheney/Ashcroft and their corporate henchmen teach him that words like “love thy neighbor” is simply enemy propoganda and deserving of swift punishment?
Will Jesus consumate his relationship with Mary Magdellan (or is Jesus playing both sides of the field these days). Will he be outed?
What is a Feminist Critique Chorus and will their voices be heard?

A mysterious and enigmatic figuresupposedly raised in a deaf family, being genetically deaf herself, and having learned to sign as her first languagePicastro front-woman Liz Hysen quickly gained notoriety for her soulfully emotive vocals and her band’s lushly atmospheric mediations. First taking their native Toronto by storm and giving the city some needed indie rock credibility in the process, their unique pairing of electric guitars, cellos, and haunting vocals soon were winning fans over outside of Canada, as the quartet was soon snatched up by Los Angeles’ leading experimental rock label, Pehr. Their debut, 2001’s Red Your Blues, drew comparisons to everyone from Godspeed You Black Emperor! to Cat Power, earned favorable reviews, and ultimately had songs turning up on network television programs. By the end of that year, Hysen was said to be recording an album of gypsy songs with avant-garde rockers Cerberus Shoal.
If you haven’t heard of Tigersaw by now, where have you been hiding? They specialize in the whisper, the waltz, and sweet songs that are jazz in concept, but not in execution. Dylan Metrano and his ever-growing band of friends and collaborators are impassioned about performing this music for people all over the world, sharing stories, playing campfires, and creating something special night after night. tigersaw.com

NON EVENT & the BERWICK RESEARCH INSTITUTE present:
JANEK SCHAEFER (UK) - modified record players, electronics
HOWARD STELZER (US) - cassette players, electronics
Non-Event & the Berwick Research Institute are pleased to present the Boston-area debut of UK sound artist and turntablist, Janek Schaefer. Using custom built record players and variety of other devices, Janek explores the spatial and architectural aspects of sound, as well as the twisting of technology. His work incorporates a hybrid of analog and digital techniques, combining field recordings with live, modified vinyl and found sounds to create evocative and involving environments. His most recent release, “Songs of Europe,” a collaboration with fellow UK turntablist, Philip Jeck, was released this fall on the Asphodel label to considerable critical acclaim.
Schaefer runs the label audiOh!Recordings and has released records on Sub Rosa, Staalplaat, Hot Air, Sirr, Rhiz, Alluvial, Diskono, and Asphodel. He works full-time as a sound artist/sound designer/musician and composer from the audiOh!Room in London and has performed and exhibited widely throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, and Australia. His Tri-phonic Turntable is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Most Versatile
Record Player.”
Howard Stelzer has been active as a composer and performer of electronic music since 1992. His improvised music utilizes the qualities inherent to cassette tape and tape players; namely hiss, the roll of tape across play heads, the crackle of dirt caught inside old players, play speed altered manually by pressure from fingers applied to the tape’s reels. His work tends to employ space and silence as well as gritty low-fidelity noise, and is almost always centered on the physicality of live performance, with an instrumental (rather than the classical ‘concrete’) approach to the tapes. He has collaborated with folks such as Kevin Drumm, Otomo Yoshihide, Le Quan Ninh, Martin Tetreault, Gert-Jan Prins, Axel Doerner, Jason Lescalleet, Jerome Noetinger, Joe McPhee, Sawako. He has toured the US and Canada six times, and performed at the TENT festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In addition to solo performance, Stelzer is a member of the BSC. He also operates the Intransitive Recordings label and mail-order catalog for electro-acoustic and improvised music, and regularly hosts sound-art, electronic and improvised music concerts in the greater Boston area.

RASA
FEATURING PAT DONAHER and RICHIE BARSHAY
Rasa, a new collaboration between saxophonist Pat Donaher and Richie Barshay, will make its debut at the Zeitgeist Gallery on Thursday December 9. From the Sanskrit which loosely translates as the “juice” of an fruit or experience, Rasa seeks that directness and excitement in all of the music it creates. Jordan Scanella will play bass, and other players will be announced shortly.
This project continues the collaboration between Barshay, currently drummer for the great Herbie Hancock’s Gershwin¹s World project and upcoming new quartet, and Donaher, the local saxophonist and composer who Cadence magazine calls “a talent worth watching”. The two met three years ago at New England Conservatory, and have collaborated on both large and small
group projects. The music draws on all their interests, particularly in exploring the convergence of different rhythmic traditions- jazz, latin, Indian, pop, and classical.

BURTON GREENE part 2:
Free jazz pioneer BURTON GREENE extends his visit to the ZEITGEIST GALLERY, with this all-star trio
BURTON GREENE/PERRY ROBINSON/JAY ROZEN
BURTON GREENE – piano (Ayler, Rivers, Tchicai, Breuker, Rudd, Silva, Dresser)
PERRY ROBINSON – clarinet (Shepp, Dixon, Izenson, Bley)
JAY ROZEN – tuba (Braxton, Persip, Butch Morris, Leo Smith)
PERRY ROBINSON, BURTON GREENE, JAY ROZEN TRIO
Perry and Burton go “bay-wack” together (way back) as original members of the Downtown sound, the NYC free jazz scene since the early 60’s. Burton was a founding member of the FFIE (Free Form Improvisation Ensemble) and the Jazz Composers Guild. Burton and Perry had a trio briefly back in ’65 with Joel Friedman on cello. This was an early example of free chamber music. Some years back they renewed the chamber trio idea for some concerts with trombonist Roswell Rudd. I guess it’s been in our craw all along so when the opportunity presented itself in this time to renew the chamber music idea with the talented Jay Rozen on tuba, we heartily jumped into it. For awhile we (the trio) had experience playing together in a quartet with drummer Kevin Norton in a group called Klez-Jazz which focused on semitic folk music music themes fused with jazz swing. The trio expands on all these past formats and ideas into a no “ism” format where we go in and out of time and (pre-set) structural themes. NOW and SPONTANEITY rules the day with the trio. Together we have more than 100 years of varied music performance experience under our belts which can be called up at any moment, and usually IS.. Come and dig what we’re up to at this Moment! You could say the past is gone, and we take care of the future by just focusing on who and what we are in the Present Moment. This is definitely where the trio is at!
“BURTON GREENE ranks as one of the seasoned survivors in creative improvised music. Like a handful of his ESP (Records) peers he’s still at it after all these years, plugging away at his craft and creating chameleonic music along the way… Greene sounds great as well, foraging over the finely tuned ivories with a self-assurance and acuity ideally suited to the auspicious surroundings.”
-Derek Taylor, All About Jazz.
He arrived in New York in 1962 and formed probably the first spontaneous composition group with bassist Alan Silva in ‘63: The Free Form Improvisation Ensemble. He joined the Jazz Composers Guild in ‘64 (organized by Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor) and formed his first recorded quartet in ‘65 which included Marion Brown and Henry Grimes. He performed in New York in the 1960’s with such people as Sam Rivers, Rashied Ali, Albert Ayler, Patty Waters, Byard Lancaster, Gato Barbieri, etc. Burton was involved with the New Music Concert Series in Town Hall and YMHA organized by Max Pollikoff which included panel discussions with Morton Feldman and Earl Brown.
Burton has collaborated with many musicians; among them are John Tchicai, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Willem Breuker, Han Bennink, Keshavan Maslak, Sunny Murray, Frank Wright, Sean Bergin, Paul Stocker, Theo Loevendie, Martin van Duynhoven, Clarence Becton, Perry Robinson, Roswell Rudd, Tjitze Vogel, Raoul van der Weide, Tom Jones, Tobias Delius, Michael Moore, Akki Hak, Lou Grassi, Wilber Morris, Roy Campbell, Mark Dresser, etc., etc.
PERRY ROBINSON is truly a musical icon, with a performing and recording career that is over 40 years old, spanning all manner of genres, styles, and categories. As Burton Greene said of Perry, “boxes, categories, separatism have little meaning for him. And therefore in his music… whatever he plays is always right on. I can’t imagine anyone not liking Perry’s music with its immediate warmth and personal communication and even though some people might term it ‘far out.’ That’s rare — to be able to create new ideas, not what is commonly accepted in the mainstream, and still bring it across immediately to a lot of people.”
Born in 1938 in New York City, he grew up in a musical family, his father Earl being a well-known film-score composer. Since then Perry has traveled far and wide to play with the most importantmusicians of his time, and in the process become a living legend of the jazz clarinet.
The list of artists with whom he has been associated is immense in quantity, quality and stylistic diversity. His discography reveals work with, among others, Henry Grimes, David Izenson, Gunter Hampel, the Brubecks, Tete Montoliu, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, Mark Whitecage, John Carter, Lou Grassi, and Burton Greene.
Today Perry’s journeys continue far and wide, staying as active as always, and discovering and rediscovering (like his new trio with the long-lost great bassist Henry Grimes). As Matt Snyder says of Perry, “The best of American melodic streams, both traditional and avant-garde, can be heard simultaneously in this fascinating musician.”
Info on Perry Robinson is at http://users.bestweb.net/~msnyder/clarinet/robinson.htm
JAY ROZEN - TUBIST, COMPOSER, IMPROVISOR
Former principal tubist with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Jay Rozen has played with the Creative Opportunity Orchestra (jazz ensemble), the Austin Klezmorim and the European Tuba Quartet. Since moving to the New York area, he has played with the SEM Ensemble, Arthur Kampela’s AVANT SAMBA and the Lennon/Tobacco/Zappa Band, which performed at the Zappanale Festival in Germany in 2002. His group THREE (3 tubas) received rave reviews for their performance at ITEC 2002.
He has also performed with jazz luminaries Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Ray Anderson, Charli Persip, Butch Morris, Burton Greene and Perry Robinson, among others. A long-time champion of new music, Mr. Rozen has had works written for him by many composers including Virgil Thomson and David Lang. Jay Rozen has appeared on over 20 CDs including his own KILLER TUBA SONGS and as soloist on David Lang’s ARE YOU EXPERIENCED, on which he plays the electric-tuba.

Back from an acclaimed European tour, the Dan Tepfer Trio returns to the Zeitgeist to introduce new arrangements of the music of Steve Lacy. The experience of working closely with Lacy and his wife, vocalist Irene Aebi, is what compelled Tepfer to look for ways to adapt Lacy’s music to the trio’s esthetic. “The challenge is to stay true to Steve’s original intent while making the music our own”, he says. In past concerts at the Zeitgeist, the Dan Tepfer Trio has revealed a rare mix of exuberance and introspection that even within complex rhythmic and harmonic explorations, is always deeply musical.
Dan Tepfer, piano is a masters student at the New England Conservatory, where he studies with Danilo Pérez and Bob Brookmeyer. He grew up studying classical piano and playing jazz in Paris, France. Most recently he has played with Chris Potter and Christian McBride.
« Dan Tepfer is a very impressive young pianist and composer. He plays fearlessly, intensely and with great sensitivity.» — FRED HERSCH
Jorge Roeder, double bass was born in Lima, Peru. Also a student at NEC, he has studied with Cecil McBee, John Lockwood, and Oscar Stagnaro and played with Alex Acuna, Kenny Wheeler, and Bill Watrous.
Richie Barshay, drums performs regularly with Herbie Hancock, George Garzone, Jane Bunnett, and numerous other freelance projects. Currently based in Boston, he is completing a bachelor’s degree at NEC.

The Dead Texan is a collaborative audio-visual release that contains a compact disc paired with a DVD containing seven video pieces designed to accompany the music on the album. Adam Wiltzie is a sound engineer and musician who has done live sound and recording work for numerous bands. He is best known as one half of the noctambulant drone duo Stars of the Lid. That group that has already collaborated with painter Jon McCafferty on one album, Per Aspera ad Astra, and plays with the stunning film accompaniment of Luke Savisky. This experience makes Wiltzie uniquely qualified to create videos for the music he makes under the name The Dead Texan.
Christina Vantzos has made video art to accompany live musical performances (most recently at the Cimatics International VJ’ing Festival in Brussels, Belgium) as well as short films. Her work has been shown in art, music, and film festivals such as LadyFest East, Transmissions 004 in Chicago in 2001, the 2001 Still Not Art Festival in Boston, the 2002 Microcine Festival in Baltimore, the 2002 Kansas City Filmakers Jubilee, and the 2003 Once. Twice Sound Festival in Baltimore. Christina Vantzos is the recipient of a 2002 Baltimore City Community Arts Project Grant for her Wide Angle Community Media project. She is currently working on a video documentary on teenage life in Scotland.
The DVD combines animation with video footage of people, places and things (like Brussels’ singular Atomium or the city’s baroque center) in ways that are both playful and profound. Accompanying is the music, which resemble Wiltzie’s work with Stars of the Lid and is reminiscent of the film music of Zbigniew Preisner and George Delerue. The videos unfold at a deliberate and engrossing pace. By the end of work on the project, the creation of music and of videos became so intertwined that The Dead Texan DVD is a work unto itself and not merely a collection of promotional videos for a group of songs.

This show will be hosting some of the best performers that we had all year and will be ending with an in-round acoustic jam coordinated by Rod Webber.
