jack rose, glenn jones

the critique of pure reason presents:
sunday, october 17, 2004
9:30pm
all ages
$8

Last year, Jack Rose stepped out from behind the dense, droning walls he and his bandmates had erected in Pelt. His first solo LP, Red Horse, White Mule, proved to be among a rare class of acoustic guitarists, propelling him to the fore of the swelling avant-garde folk scene that largely revolves around the Northeast US. In the time since he has released a very limited CDR of ragtime under the moniker Doctor Ragtime, in addition to playing a fair amount of shows across the US. With Fahey gone and Kottke collaborating with members of Phish, Rose’s LPs have placed him at the head of a small (but very welcome) pack of acoustic guitarists (Steffan Basho-Junghans, Glenn Jones, Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasny), who are pushing themselves towards a thrilling revolution.

Glenn Jones: “When the tumbling arpeggios of an acoustic 12-string guitar are affecting enough to conjure visions of cool waterfalls and long walks along verdant country paths, there’s a kind of sensory magic at work. Whether Glenn Jones, guitarist and leader of Cul de Sac, is revisiting old-time mountain music for his inspiration in “One Jack Rose (That I Mean)” or picking and playing slide in the tradition of one of his sources of inspiration, John Fahey, in the title track, what’s constant on his solo acoustic debut is an abundance of rich tumbling melodies built from crisp, clean resonating notes. Jones’s sensibility, which embraces blues, jazz, classical, folk, and improvisation, finds moods and modes changing often, though he prefers a sort of slow evolution in each piece. It’s all done with a natural, unforced feel devoid of flash and etched in slow detail so every nuance of his vibrato and tone can be absorbed.” (TED DROZDOWSKI)

In which a young backsliding christian girl falls asleep during a fiery commie-bashing sermon and dreams (or perhaps…hallucinates) that her small town has been taken over by the Soviets! What follows is a fantasmagoric journey into cheap anticommunist lunacy full of shoddy bloodshed and beautifully inept acting.

the critique of pure reason is pleased to present:

vetiver
viking moses
the shrinking islands

$9, all ages
no advance tickets
please, if possible, leave your backpacks and courier bags at home so there’s room for everyone!

Vetiver: “Like the tall, narrow grass that is its namesake, Vetiver is fragile sounding but strong, densely layered with melody, texture, and rhythm yet uncluttered….Andy Cabic’s wistful tones at times remind one of Nick Drake, hobo folk, and even Cat Stevens as they meander along the dusty road of Americana” (SF Bay Guardian). vetiverse.com

Viking Moses: He plays the banjo and sings sad songs. He rides buses and sleeps on floors. He’s always leaving town. He’s a little bit country and a little bit alterna-roll. He’s a midwestern traveler, a pal of bands like Palace and Sebadoh, a banjo picker, a mandolin strummer, a harmonica blower. He’s Brendon Massei, Las Vegas native and sole proprietor of Viking Moses. Mr. Moses sings simple stories of girls, highways, loss and loneliness. Sometimes he sounds a bit weary for his age of twentysomething, but the glimpses of teen-angst that peek through the music now and again keep things interesting.

Local boys make good: The Shrinking Islands are Kyle Bittinger and Andy Tefft. They’ve updated the terrific jangly pop sounds of the late 80s and early 90s and made them their own. The Shrinking Islands rock!
